Nickel (Ni) is a chemical element with the symbol Ni, density of 8.9 g/cm³, melting point of 1455∘C, and boiling point of 2730∘C. This ferromagnetic transition metal exhibits exceptional corrosion resistance in acidic and alkaline environments, particularly suitable for reducing media. Notable for its resistance to caustic solutions like potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide, making it ideal for ion-exchange membrane caustic soda processes.
Compared to most alloys, nickel demonstrates superior corrosion resistance in fluorine-containing environments. It performs effectively in dry chlorine and hydrogen chloride gas from room temperature to 540°C, and in static hydrofluoric acid solutions. Nickel maintains excellent mechanical properties across wide temperature ranges, with cold workability comparable to mild steel.
